Accessories: materials, dimensions and care
A product photograph establishes appearance, but it does not give you every practical detail. Before choosing an accessory, read the exact variant’s specifications and compare them with something you already use.
In this guide
Read the composition, not just the headline
Look for the named material and any stated percentages. Separate the outer material, lining and trim when the retailer lists them individually. A product name such as “silk scarf” should be checked against its composition rather than treated as a complete specification.
Terms such as “premium” or “luxurious” describe positioning; they do not replace the material details you need to compare two pieces.
Distinguish colour from material
Gold-toned and silver-coloured describe appearance. They do not establish precious-metal content. If the material matters to your decision, look for a precise description of the base material, coating or finish and ask the retailer when it is unclear.
Similarly, a brown or cognac surface does not establish that a product is leather. Use the stated composition rather than the photograph.
Compare measurements with a familiar object
- Bags: check width, height and depth, the size of the opening, and strap length or drop. External dimensions do not guarantee usable internal space.
- Card holders: check the number and arrangement of slots, the closure and any stated room for notes or coins.
- Scarves: compare length and width with a scarf you like wearing. Look for whether fringe is included in the stated measurement.
A paper outline can help you judge scale. It cannot establish weight, feel, flexibility or how a closure works.
Check the features that matter to your routine
A pocket is only useful if it holds what you need. Check whether a strap is adjustable or removable, whether a closure suits your use and whether any capacity claim names a specific device or size. Ask for clarification when a specification leaves your main requirement unanswered.
Consider care before choosing
Read the retailer’s care guidance and any product label available before ordering. Consider whether the recipient will be comfortable with those instructions. Do not assume that a blend has the same care requirements as one of its fibres, or invent a cleaning method from a photograph.
Keep facts and judgement separate
“The retailer lists a 120 cm strap” is a specification. “This may suit someone who prefers cross-body wear” is an assessment that still depends on fit and adjustment. Neither establishes first-hand testing.
Our future product selections will identify the exact variant and distinguish published specifications from our assessment and any genuine hands-on experience. No products are recommended on this draft page.
Use these checks when choosing a gift or compare colour combinations with your wardrobe.
